SemioticsIt is how we look at signs and interpret what we see. We make meaning out of the signs and pictures. There are many categories that go into this process and how we interpret them. Carrying the meaning of the sign or picture depends on the use of codes and transferring the data from the source to the receiver. No matter what translations, meanings, and modifications occur to the what the artists is originally trying to get across. When we look at differences of objects we...tend to highlight the main features that interests us and ignore the other features. When I first looked at the picture the first aspect that I saw was that her head was facing a different way, and she was wearing a tie in one of the pictures. What I failed to see was that the picture in the left looked as though her life consisted of nothing but clutter and she was using this big space with negative fillers by adding all the unnecessary items to the wall. The one on the left made her seem as though she was more organized with herself and her life, but she was happier in the picture on the left. There are five differences in this photo can you find them? Answers What is a simileAs one can see here this is an example of a simile for the picture is comparing two items a dog and a sock. This lets the reader look closer into the aspects of the dog by giving it characteristics. The second item is that of a sock and since they were able to compare those two things together one was able to make a dog out of smelly socks. One is able to shed light on an old object and make connections with another one When asked to look at these pictures to see which ones more most alike the easiest choice would be pick the top middle and the lower right one considering they ware both red. But when I first looked at this shapes I looked at the size and compared them that why. is there another way to compare the shapes? The Emotive FunctionAs producers of communications we often reveal things about our emotions. Some ways that one can do this is by interjection which is when one uses words or phrases to exclaim, protest, or command. Another way is to drag words by adding more letters to make it make it seem more important (example, biiiiiiiggg). The Conative Function The effect of what the people receiving the information are getting. The person addresses and gives commands. They are controlling what they want the receive to get out of the product. The Referential FunctionHow the words are used to create a particular form of refrence. Please enjoy this prezi explaining it more in dept The Phatic FunctionContent of communications is redundant because the purpose is to keep the channels of communications open. By asking questions to the person receiving the information this helps maintain and establish communication with that person. Do you know what I mean, are you listening to me are ways to do this? The metalingual FucntionOne needs to make sure that communication is working.Content of what you are saying matter because you are checking to see where what has been said is being completely understood. Please enjoy this article breaking down this fuction. Hall in chapter 5, Textual Structure on how meanings can be generated:
Meanings are generated by aspects of texts. There is the content of the text which revolves around the shape of the letters, kind of font, style of layout, color, how they are aligned, spaced out, and layered. Then one needs to know the content of the text which is the meaning of the words along with the references if there are any, A way to produce this is by using punctuation!! Then one needs to consider the form of the image which consists of various basic structures, formal elements that organize the image. Then there is the content of the image, is it something concrete that we can identify by looking at it or abstract? Then there is the form of the object, which consists of the various structures, the physical makeup of the object and the effect of our experience. Last but not least, the content of the object, which consists of what the objects and what might be taken to represent. |
